African-American abolitionist, Sarah Parker Remond

African-American abolitionist, Sarah Parker Remond

Sarah Parker Remond was an abolitionist, women’s rights campaigner and public speaker.

Sarah Parker Remond broke many barriers for women by travelling around the US and Great Britain in 1859, without a male escort, to make speeches against slavery. She attempted (sadly, unsuccessfully) to have New York’s state constitution reworded to 'expand rights to women and black people', and spent the rest of her life working in Italy as a physician.

Sarah Parker Remond has been honoured with a Nubian Jak blue plaque, sponsored by Black History Walks and Royal Holloway. The plaque was unveiled on March 25 at Grenville Street, London. If you missed the unveiling, we encourage you to visit the plaque and watch our video here: youtube.com/watch?v=9yMpD7bf2A0
