International Geoscience Prize

Congratulations to Royal Holloway Earth Sciences student David Withworth, who has been awarded the third prize in the Halliburton Landmark Earth Model Award, an International Geoscience Competition Rewarding Excellence in Master’s Level Research. In addition to this, David has also been awarded the Masters Student of the Year prize assigned by FindAMasters.

David’s Research Project was titled: ‘Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) potential of salt anticlines & diapirs in the coastal areas of the Sole Pit High & Silver Pit Basin, UK Sector, Southern North Sea.’

For the project, David analysed the geometries of subsurface salt structures in the offshore UK sector for their potential of salt cavern design and storage utilising 3D seismic interpretation and geomechanical analysis. He was supervised by Prof. Jürgen Adam.

The Earth Model Award (EMA) was established as the Neftex Earth Model Award in 2012, in affiliation with the Geological Society of London, to foster the link between industry and academia by rewarding excellence in Master’s level research.

Dave has recently started a PhD at the Keele University where he is working Carbon Sequestration and Utilisation (CCUS). We wish him the very best of luck for his future studies and look forward to seeing the results of his research.
