Prof Penelope Corfield

Penelope Corfield works on all aspects of the history of Georgian Britain & Ireland - and she also writes on critical theories and approaches to history. She is President of the International Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies; an elected Member of the Academy of Europe (Academia Europaea); and Research Fellow in the Humanities Research Institute at the University of Newcastle-UK.

Penelope Corfield has written widely on eighteenth-century Britain.  Specific contributions relate to the history of towns; social class; gender roles; social greetings; the nascent professions; and electoral history, with special reference to the big open constituencies (the obverse of the ‘pocket boroughs’).  Her overview interpretation appears in The Georgians: The Deeds & Misdeeds of Eighteenth Century Britain (forthcoming Yale University Press, January 2022).

Penelope Corfield has also distilled her study of approaches to history into a handbook, entitled Becoming a Historian: An Informal Guide, co-authored with Tim Hitchcock (forthcoming University of London Press, May 2022).
