The exhibition is curated by Dr James Clifford Kent (SMLLC/Centre for Visual Cultures) and Sarah Creed (Exhibitions Curator, RHUL) and will be held in the Exhibition Space, Emily Wilding Davison Building

Following a period of momentous change for Cuba, signified by the end of the Castro era, this new exhibition will explore contemporary documentary photography and its role in representing the country and its people both inside and outside the island. Showcasing work by world-renowned photographers such as Raúl Cañibano and Michael Christopher Brown, the exhibition will include previously unseen photographs that offer a snapshot of the changing face of Cuba.
The free exhibition draws on Dr Kent's expertise on photography and visual culture in contemporary Cuba, which was the subject of his recent monograph Aesthetics and the Revolutionary City: Real and Imagined Havana (Palgrave, 2018). His most recent work has focused specifically on the presence of iconic revolutionary images in contemporary Cuban society and the relationship between photography, language and identity.
This free exhibition, open until 23 June 2019, will also be complimented by a series of talks and workshops around photographic practice, language and visual culture.
